Modified on: Wed, 8 Feb 2023 10:42 AMDo I need to update?
You can check your version of macOS by clicking Apple logo in the upper left corner and click About This Mac.
If you are already on macOS Monterey, you not need to update.
If you are on macOS Big Sur or other, you need to update by following the instructions below.
Please don't try to update to macOS Ventura. macOS Ventura is not yet supported on campus.
If you are being prompted to update to macOS Ventura - you are most likely using System Preferences to update.
Do not use System Preferences. Please use only Self-Service for updates or any other software installations.
Before proceeding with the update:
● Please ensure all important files are saved and uploaded to Google Drive or Dropbox
● Connect your computer to a charger
● Close any apps you may have open
● Make sure that the computer is connected to the internet
In most cases this process will take 30-90 minutes to complete, during which time you will not be able to use your Mac.
In some cases this process can take more than two hours to complete, so we highly recommend to start the update in the evening, when you will not be needing to use your device.
To update your macOS to macOS Monterey,
1. Open your Self Service
2. Click on Update to macOS Monterey
3. This will open the screen with the following warning:

After you enter your computer password, you will see this screen (take a look at the screenshot below)
Please note:
You will not be able to use your computer from 30 minutes to 2 hours until update is finished.

In rare circumstances, you might lose the files that saved locally to your computer. It's best to back up all important files from your computer to Google Drive/Dropbox BEFORE updating your computer.

If you are ready to update - click Confirm.
5. That's it. Now we will do all the heavy lifting.
After you confirmed that you want to update now, you will see this screen (take a look at the screenshot below)
After the preparation for the update finishes, the computer will restart and start the update. During the update the computer might restart several times.
Please do not disconnect the charger, do not try to shut the computer down and do not close the lid.
Possible errors and solutions:
1. Waiting for AC Power Connection - Connect the charger
To ensure that the computer update will finish successfully, we require to connect your computer to a charger BEFORE starting the update.
If you tried to start the update without the charger, you will see the warning like on the screenshot below. You will have 1 minute to connect your charger. If you will fail to connect the charger during 1 minute cooldown, the update will fail and you will have to restart it from Self-Service
2. Downloading macOS - Wait until macOS downloads
While we cached the new macOS on all the computers, in some cases our update installer will need to download the update.
This may take up to two hours depending on your internet speed. You will see the progress of the download in real time.
3. Not enough free space - Delete unused files
The update won't start unless you have at least 40 GB of free space on your computer.
Please delete unused files and try again.
